Knowing how to tie a scarf on a purse can give you ways to add a bit of flair to your handbag. If you want to personalize your purse without detracting from its value, try one of the seven ways to express your style.

How to Tie a Scarf on a Purse to Personalize

You can learn how to tie a scarf on a Louis Vuitton bag, Coach bag, or other designer purse. You can use a designer scarf or make use of a scarf you no longer wear.

Choose a Scarf

If you know what outfit you plan to wear while carrying the purse, you can choose a matching scarf. You can use a 21" square, a rectangle scarf, or a twilly scarf to tie to your purse.

1. Single Handle Wrap With Square Scarf

The easiest and most popular way to tie a scarf on a purse is to wrap the handle. If you have two handles, then choose the one that is closer to the front of the purse so you can show off your scarf wrap. You may decide to wrap both handles either with identical scarves or matching ones. You can follow a few quick steps and end up with a great way to decorate and protect the handle(s) of your purse.

Purse With Single Handle Wrap Scarf

Fold the Scarf

  1. Lay the scarf out on a flat surface.
  2. Take two opposite corners and fold over to the center, slightly overlapping them.
  3. Take the folded side closest to you and fold over to the other side.

Wrap the Handle

  1. Careful to keep the scarf folded, thread one end of the scarf through the metal handle ring that attaches it to the bag.
  2. If your bag doesn't have a ring and is sewn directly onto the bag, loop the scarf around the handle near where it is sewn to the bag.
  3. In both instances, you'll draw the end of the scarf up to make a knot, so the end of the scarf hangs down from underneath the knot.
  4. Hold the knotted scarf in place and begin wrapping the handle.
  5. You'll need to wrap the handle in diagonal movements to keep the fabric from slipping.
  6. Make sure you wrap it close enough, so the handle doesn't peep through the wraps.
  7. Once you get to the end of the handle, you will either thread the end through the ring or wrap it around the handle. Tie a knot, making sure you leave enough of the pointed end of the scarf dangling below the knot.

2. Bow Wrap the Flap With a Square Scarf

Create a cute look when you wrap the flap of your purse. You will need enough of a flap to warrant this wrap.

Fold the Scarf

  1. Lay the scarf out on a flat surface.
  2. Take two opposite corners and fold over to the center, slightly overlapping them.
  3. Take the folded side closest to you and fold over to the other side.

Wrap the Flap

  1. Center the scarf underneath the flap of your handbag.
  2. Take the two ends, one on each side of the flap.
  3. Pull the ends over the front of the flap.
  4. Tie the two ends of your scarf together and create a bow.
  5. Adjust the bow so it's in the center of the outside flap and you're ready to go!

3. Knot Wrap a Medium Sized Purse With Rectangle Scarf

If your purse doesn't have a flap but you wish to have the same look as the wrapped flap, you will need a larger scarf. You can use a rectangle shaped scarf for a medium sized purse.

Fold the Scarf

  1. Lay the scarf out on a flat surface.
  2. Fold the scarf in half lengthwise.
  3. Fold it one more time lengthwise (you want it approximately the depth of the bag, so adjust if needed).

Wrap the Bag

  1. Place the purse front side up onto the scarf.
  2. Make sure the purse is centered on the scarf.
  3. Gather one end of the scarf in each hand.
  4. Bring the two ends over the front of the purse.
  5. Tie the two ends into a knot.
  6. Stand the purse upright.
  7. Fold the excess material of the scarf over onto itself (this may be in layers).
  8. Once the top of the purse is free of the scarf, you can fluff up the ends of the scarf around the knot on the front.

4. Simple One Knot Trailing Scarf

You may want to show off your scarf more than some tied scarf designs provide. You can do with a simple knot.

Fold the Scarf

  1. Fold two opposite corners into the center.
  2. Fold each side into the center.
  3. Fold the scarf onto itself to create a narrow band.

Tie Scarf to the Handle

  1. Find the center of the scarf by folding the two lengths together until they are even.
  2. The opposite end is the center.
  3. Position the scarf at the back of the handle so the center of the scarf is even with the handle.
  4. Bring the ends of the scarf to the front of the purse and tie a knot.
  5. Fluff up the knot so it is attractive.
  6. Allow your scarf to flow freely from the knot for a breezy effect when you carry it.

You can make your tied scarf more interesting by tying it off center so one length is longer than the other one. This can be just a slight difference in the lengths or a dramatic short and long effect.

5. Accessorize a Bag With a Scarf Rose

You can tie a rose on your purse handle with a 21" square scarf. Choose a scarf that has a little texture so it will hold the rose shape. A silk scarf will be too pliable for this design. You can hide a care tag by using the corner to fold into the scarf.

Fold the Scarf

  1. Fold two opposite corners into the center.
  2. Fold each side into the center.
  3. Fold the scarf onto itself to create a narrow band.

Create the Rose

  1. Slip a corner end through the purse handle ring from the back so the scarf tag/corner is extended 2"-3".
  2. Wrap the scarf around the handle once time, being careful to hold the scarf in place at the handle ring.
  3. Take the other end of the scarf and thread it through the back of the handle ring as well.
  4. Bring it over the top of the wrap.
  5. This secures the end at the handle ring.
  6. Gently tug on the two ends to tighten the scarf slightly.
  7. Twist the length of the scarf in a loose twisting motion to keep it evenly twisted.
  8. Continue to twist until you reach about 2"- 3" from the end of the scarf.
  9. Grasp the end where you've stopped twisting and continue to twist the scarf.
  10. The scarf twist should begin to coil around itself.
  11. Assist the coil by wrapping it around itself as you continue to twist the scarf length until it is completely wrapped around the coil.
  12. Pull the end of the coil that you didn't twist around the rose (clockwise) around the back of the rose and feed it through the back of the handle ring. This will secure the rose.
  13. Splay the two ends out from the rose to mimic leaves.

6. Tie a Twilly Scarf for a Bag Handle

If you don't like the handle on your purse, try a twisted twilly scarf handle. A twisted scarf handle can give your purse a colorful textured new look. For this scarf purse, you will use a twilly scarf. A twilly scarf is long and narrow. You can buy them in various sizes. For example, the average twilly scarf is 2" x 33". For a twisted handle scarf, you can use a Hermes Maxi Twilly is 8" x 87" or other scarf with a similar length.

  1. Find the center of the scarf by placing the two ends together and holding the center between your forefinger and thumb.
  2. With your other hand, thread the scarf through the ring for the handle.
  3. Gently pull the scarf through the ring until you reach the center point of the scarf.
  4. Bring both halves of the scarf together, careful to keep it centered on the ring/tag point.
  5. Set your bag so it is resistant to you pulling on the scarf halves.
  6. Pull the scarf halves full length.
  7. Begin twisting each length, making sure you twist the two halves in toward each other. You will twist the right length to the left (counterclockwise) and the left length to the right (clockwise).
  8. Keep the twist tight without being too tight. The twist should just begin to turn into itself.
  9. Be careful that the scarf doesn't begin to bunch up in knotty twists. Adjust the tension if needed.
  10. While twisting, you can begin to braid the two lengths.
  11. Continue twisting and braiding until you reach the end of the scarf.
  12. Keep about 2"-3" of scarf leftover.
  13. Thread one side of the scarf length through the purse handle ring until the last twist stop it from tugging through the ring.
  14. Keep a firm grip on the other length to prevent the scarf from untwisting.
  15. Cross the two ends and tie a knot.
  16. Tie a second knot and adjust the ends to spread out.
