It is illegal to sell counterfeits of the designer purses, because of trademark issues. However, if the purse is simply inspired by a designer, then it's fine. Inspired means it will not look exact and there will be very noticeable differences. The purse also will not hold the designer's name anywhere, since it is not that brand. Hi Carolyn,

It really depends on the type of handbag you are selling. If it is made as a fake, an exact copy of the original, then it is illegal to sell it. You are infringing on trademarks in most cases and peddling a counterfeit item. However, if it is a replica and is markably different in some way from the original, then it is usually okay. For example, G's instead of C's on a Coach looking purse and no fake Coach emblems anywhere. So, one is a Coach inspired purse and one is a fake Coach purse. Hope that helps :)

Most of the sources for knockoff handbags are from overseas manufacturers. Your best bet for locating this merchandise is to attend a fashion trade show in your area. You can also try sites such as Whole Sale Directory to locate suppliers.

Whom do I contact to buy a large amount of designer "knock-off" purses so I can re-sale them? Some people in my area are selling Coach, Louis Vuittion and Prada for less than $75 each and they look so much like the real thing.

Do you mean that you want to start a purse business or just that you'd like to own several different designs? The knockoff handbags have a wide range as far as price, designs and quality.

Hi Deb,

There are many different fakes and knock-offs. I would seek the ones that admit to being replicas. If they try to sell as the real thing, when they obviously are not, then the integrity of the seller is in question. Some things I would look for:

Good quality materials (material or leather is of high quality)
Even and small stitching
No fraying or seams coming apart
Heavy, solid material on inside of purse
Pay careful attention to where the straps attach to the purse (this is where many purses give out)
