The Tampa Bay backpack program was featured for the summer of 2006 and was designed to make the school season more affordable for needy families. This program was one of many charitable community outreaches that sprung from the Somebody Cares Tampa Bay, Inc. Moreover, this backpack program was influential in that it activated and inspired many community churches and organizations within the Tampa Bay area and even outside the perimeters of this location.

Somebody Cares

The Somebody Cares Tampa Bay organization is a network of non-profit independent groups throughout the Tampa Bay area that help to support the community, particularly the sick, the ailing and the impoverished. It is a religious Protestant Christian institution that seeks to mobilize Christians in an effort to improve the state of the less fortunate. The organization was founded by Dr. Daniel Bernard, a highly accredited Christian pastor who spent a lot of time doing missionary work in West Africa before settling in Tampa Bay to create the Somebody Cares foundation.

Somebody Cares Tampa Bay is located in Clearwater, Florida, at 2140 Range Rd., Unit A & B. In the event that you would like to be involved in any further outreach ministries, you may call 727.536.2273. This ministry will also accept checks sent to their mailing donations as well as credit card donations which can be processed online at the official Somebody Cares Tampa Bay site.

Backpack Program Details

The Somebody Cares foundation purchases backpacks in bulk and then sells them to independent charities for extremely discounted prices. These backpacks can be passed out either filled or unfilled. The filled backpacks will contain items like:

  • Spiral Notebooks
  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Rulers
  • Crayons
  • Colored Pencils
  • Erasers
  • A Two-Pocket Folder
  • Glue Sticks

The backpacks are also quite sturdy and their size depends on the grade of the student. Larger and deeper backpacks are given to children grades 6-12 whereas the smaller variety is passed out to grades K-5. These backpacks are manufactured using formidable vinyl canvas and will usually feature at least 3 zippered pockets. Kids will delight in the color choices available, which include: red, blue, gold, brown, green and black.

Independent charities meet with the Somebody Cares Foundation on specific dates to purchase the backpacks for their own Back-to-School programs.

The response has been extremely positive, and the Somebody Cares organization has discussed testimonials involving grateful children who would have otherwise been laughed at by peers for not having school supplies. Parents have also been exceedingly grateful that these school supplies were been provided for their children.
