Quilted Duffle Bags

From LoveToKnow Handbags

Quilted duffle bags are a great option when you need a more capacious bag but don't want to compromise on looks. They can be just as practical as any other travel bag, but are softer and tend to come in fun patterns. If you don't need the bag to carry something heavy or awkward, you can even have a great time making one on your own.

A hand-quilted bag is perfect for carrying craft supplies.

The Use of Quilted Duffle Bags

It's no wonder that quilted duffle bags are a favorite choice of craftspeople everywhere. The bags have a storied history as the perfect tote for a serious quilter, stitcher or knitter. Years ago, old quilts were often salvaged by being turned into large, loose bags perfect for storing scraps and sewing equipment. These days, those same scraps can be used for a fun project making one's own bag. Because a quilted bag is soft and fairly thick, it is ideal for carrying a lot of sewing or crafting equipment. If you're hauling your things, they can become pretty bulky. People who don't do crafts never understand just what's involved. A knitter might carry several sets of knitting needles, a stitching needle, a counter, a holder, patterns, balls of yarn and the work itself. A loose, large bag is an absolute must, and a quilted duffle bag, with its good size, strength and light weight is just perfect.

Of course, even if you buy a quilted duffle ready-made, it is a bag whose look immediately suggests a serious craftsperson. As knitting and other handwork has come back into vogue, with women hosting craft parties regularly, it's fun to project to others who you are and what you're about.

Shopping for Quilted Duffles

Since quilted duffle bags are such a mainstay of the craftsperson, it is hardly a surprise that some of the best choices can be found not in luggage or handbag shops but in fabric or craft stores. As the interest in knitting and sewing has grown, so has the design of bags that carry equipment. A ready-made craft bag can be tailored to your specialty, with interior zippered compartments to hold varying sizes of needles, thread, thimbles, finger guards and embroidery rings. Some bags will be even more elaborate. But for most serious craftspeople, it's the simplest bag that makes the most sense. If you are serious about your work, you will already have more convenient carrying containers for the various pieces of equipment and so all you really need is a good bag that will accommodate everything and zip up tightly. Your one other consideration might be a backpack component, because if you're carrying around yarn for a blanket, it can get heavy and awkward and it's nice to distribute the weight evenly.

Shops geared for dancers also often have a nice selection of quilted duffle bags. Dancers love quilted bags for the same reason craftspeople do – they are soft so that the several pairs of shoes inside, even taps, don't hit the body while on the run, and they are capacious enough for said shoes, towels, several changes of clothes, sheet music, water bottles and snacks all fit easily.

Make Your Own Bag

A basic duffle bag is so easy to make, you don't have to be an experienced sewer to put one together. If your bag is for carrying heavy items, you will need to have a little more skill, but a simple bag doesn't take much effort and can be fun and satisfying besides. Patterns can be found online – you might start with Quilting Connect.

Even if you don't want to make a bag from scratch, you can still personalize a store-bought bag. A quilted bag is very easy to enhance with ribbons, patches or even a monogram. In nearly no time, your new bag can be uniquely yours.

Hi Marilyn,

You can try some sites for crafters, but you may have to come up with your own pattern. Most fabric stores employ women who are experts in this, so you may be able to hire one to create a pattern for you. Or, try to take a sewing class through one of the centers and use this as your project. Good luck!
