Backpack Problems
From LoveToKnow Handbags
Most of the common backpack problems can be solved or avoided with a bit of common sense and attention to the body.
The Biggest Backpack Problem
Weight has been and probably always will be the number one problem with carrying a backpack. Both kids and adults just carry too much stuff every day. However, it's often unavoidable, so smart planning is required.
The first thing you need to know is how to pack a backpack so as to distribute the weight to the best advantage. The heaviest items must go closest to your back. This will prevent an excess of pull on your shoulders. That pull can tighten your lower back, which can lead to long-term health issues. Likewise, a backpack that is too heavy can cause you to hunch over to accommodate its bulk, and this will also create health problems. For children and adults, no matter how strong you are, a backpack should not weigh more than 15 percent of the person's body weight.
In addition to packing a backpack properly, it's important to take some time and consider what's actually needed on a day-to-day basis. Many times, a backpack is too heavy simply because you are carrying more than you need. It can be hard to anticipate what's needed through a busy day, but you might be surprised at the difference made in leaving even a few small things at home.
The Right Backpack
Many backpack problems are created simply because you have bought the wrong backpack for your needs. If you are going to be using the backpack every day and carrying heavy items, it's important to shop carefully and get plenty of information before you buy. Of course, you want a stylish backpack that looks good, but it's much more important to have one that meets your requirements.
For those who carry a laptop, there is no question that you need a backpack with a specially padded laptop component, unless you use a separate padded case. You should also look for a laptop backpack with padded shoulder straps. This is not only more comfortable for your shoulders, but prevents slippage.
If you worry about sweating because of a long walk with all that weight against your back, a backpack with a mesh backing will cut down on the heat.
You must also look for a backpack that has straps that go around the waist. This may sound like something only for hikers, but it does a lot to steady a heavy load even when just running around town. Keeping a backpack stable on your back prevents injury.
The Right Way to Carry
You can have the right backpack and know how to pack it, but many backpack problems related to health issues and discomfort are caused by incorrect carrying. A lot of people feel silly carrying a backpack as it is meant to be worn: over both shoulders, and with the straps around the waist if it's heavy. It seems much more hip to wear it over one shoulder. This can also be construed as more convenient if you're running errands. It can be a drag to take the backpack off just enough to pull out a wallet or a bus pass or retrieve a ringing phone several times. But many new backpacks are designed with easy-access pockets that hold small items, so you don't have to take it on and off. It's worth paying a bit more for a convenient backpack as it saves a lot of health trouble down the line.
You also want to be sure the straps are high up on your shoulders and the weight evenly distributed. It may take a few tries to get it right, but it's easy and worth the effort. Carry your backpack correctly, and you'll prevent serious problems.
